Consulting

The publishing world is changing daily. While it’s far more difficult today to get a traditional publishing deal, the “traditional” route is no longer the only choice. Whatever the need, in an industry in flux, Forefront helps individuals, companies, and organizations find the best path of action.

With 25 years of experience, we can help.

The Right Strategy to Book Publishing

For an individual author, a not-for-profit, or a publishing company with an important book, a winning strategy can be complex. Do you have the right publicity team? Assuming you have marketing money, where do you spend it? How do you reach your potential audiences, so they actually buy your book? Because all components are critical to your launch and publishing, Jonathan helps you work through your strategies, and through the hidden challenges that come with publishing books.

If you plan more than one book, your strategy for multiple releases is of utmost importance. How soon is too soon to release? How long is too long to wait? Your answers influence retailers and others who, in turn, influence your book sales. Because the cadence of a book-release sequence is as important as any other aspect of publishing, Jonathan helps you understand the ins and outs of a multiple-book strategy.

Distribution Solutions

What’s the best way to get your books into buyers’ hands? Most companies say they get your book into stores, when in reality, they make your book available to stores through Ingram Distributors and/or other distributors. This doesn’t mean your book, physically, is on a Barnes & Noble shelf – or on any bookstore shelf. Jonathan helps you understand how distribution works, as well as what can and can’t be done to have books available, and findable, by your potential buyers.

Launch
Campaigns

The launch campaign is the most critical element to the success of the book. Publicity, marketing/advertising, and social media are all important. You will need to come up with a plan that ties all these together to work in unison to help you garner the attention and results you desire. It’s more complicated than you think. We can help guide you in the process and introduce you to our team of world-caliber marketing and publicity professionals that have extensive experience in launching best-sellers. The major houses use our team, why shouldn’t you?

Traditional Publishing vs. Self Publishing

There are many issues to contemplate when deciding to publish. You need to choose the right path and that could mean either seeking a deal with a traditional publisher or self-publishing. From editorial control, timing of release, format, margins on sales, to the freedom to update are all important to consider, Jonathan can help you understand the pros and cons of each option and help you make the right decision for your book. Forefront’s model gives you the best of both worlds—the control of self-publishing plus the distribution and sales potential of a traditional publishing contract.

Agenting

If you go the traditional route and seek a deal with a traditional publisher, getting your proposal together and to the right places is especially challenging. A literary agent is a must. As a publisher, Jonathan had to decline many great and publishable proposals because they fell outside his division’s genres. Authors can grow discouraged by rejection but the real problem was misdirection. Jonathan’s experience in the publishing industry helps you find the right places to sell your book.

Other Issues

Other issues confound those trying to navigate the publishing waters: from how to get on the bestseller lists* to figuring out how the industry works, to getting to retailers, to understanding sub-rights and international rights, to knowing why certain sales don’t count. Most recently, Jonathan helped the Dave Ramsey organization navigate a relationship with NPD’s Bookscan, which reports book sales numbers. Because even the most professional and efficient organizations hit snags in the publishing industry, Jonathan helps you find the solutions – even if they’re not what you think.

When discussing what it takes to get on the bestseller lists, this is not in any way, shape or form code for how to buy your way on to the lists or how to game the system. We do not provide those types of services nor do we condone them.
